Artist Statement

Yankiu Chan (Kimmy), born in Hong Kong in 1996, is a visual artist and educator. She earned her bachelor's degree in Visual Arts Education from The Education University of Hong Kong and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Bath Spa University.

Her practice spans painting, installation art, and ceramics. Since 2024, she has focused on porcelain—drawn to its historical roots in China and the ironic contrast with the porcelain commonly used in Hong Kong, which is largely imported from the UK. This duality serves as a metaphor for the complexities of Hong Kong’s cultural identity.

Kimmy views art and life as inherently intertwined, drawing inspiration from her everyday experiences. In recent years, her work has centered on the impact of large-scale urban development in Hong Kong, which has displaced farms, animals, people, and local industries. Her art explores the interconnectedness of crops, animals, humans, and land—addressing the environmental and social consequences of urbanization. Through her practice, she hopes to strengthen the relationship between people and the land, while deepening public awareness of Hong Kong’s cultural and ecological landscape.

Cultural symbolism—particularly Hong Kong motifs, such as Canton porcelain—plays a central role in her work, creating a visual dialogue on identity, belonging, and the evolving character of the city.
