From Shore is a visual book that traces my journey into freediving, transitioning from land to sea, noise to silence, and surface to depth. Each of the 21 images was captured during my eight-day solo training in Dahab, Egypt, the “Mecca of Freedivers.”

In training, I would swim from the busy coastline towards deeper zones. With every stroke, the sounds of land—people, music, voices—faded. The further I went, the quieter it became, not just around me, but inside me. This movement away from noise and into stillness became the core of the book’s design.

The book features no binding; each sheet is individually folded, revealing the full image only after a slow unfolding, mirroring the descent into calm beneath the surface.

I used the coding platform p5.js to generate mosaic patterns visualising the shift from chaos to quiet. I began with colours sampled from the shore—bright clothes, umbrellas, paddleboards—forming dense tiles. As the sequence progresses, the mosaics become larger, blurrier, and more monochromatic, fading into soft blue, representing how clutter dissolves into underwater stillness. The UV coating follows the same rhythm, starting with partial coverage and gradually building into a solid blue layer, echoing the ocean’s way of wrapping you in quietness.

In freediving, going deeper means letting go of control and trusting silence. Through this book, I wanted to ask: can design do the same thing—can it let go of telling, and simply allow us just to feel?
