My connection to textiles and stitch began within the traditions of patchwork and quilting. It has now naturally developed into an active and engaged practice, embracing time-laden, time-embodied stitched cloth.

The heritage of domestic, utilitarian crafts and their link to the past; skills, that for me, have been passed through the matrilineal line, are key to my ways of working. Slow, hand-stitched, hand-crafted textiles pieces are created to represent contemporary ideas and issues in a familiar yet gently thought-provoking way. Each work’s narrative is underpinned by extensive research and an active engagement with people, place and process.

Cloth and colour are used as a vehicle for encapsulating fading memories, fading stories; personal, familial, historical and societal. Stories rendered in cloth. Memories, histories and connections, however fragmentary, made tangible, in textile form, before they are lost.

My Final Project investigates the colour potentials close to home, displaying them in the form of a quilt, using the template of the very first quilt I made, when I was 16. I still treasure it. I learnt to quilt via it. I can tell you where every piece of second-hand cloth within it, came from. This new iteration is made from hand-dyed silks, and I can tell you where every plant that gave its colour was sited, at home. The very essence of a place embedded in fabric using site specific plant material, capturing the environmental memories and stories of this place and this moment in time, in natural colour.
