Artist Statement
Originally from the Netherlands, my practice explores how cultural traditions and spaces unconsciously shape our relationships with ourselves and our communities. The practice delves into the subconscious interplay between national identity and gender identity. Utilising my background in theatre, I use lighting, costuming, framing, and props to create worlds, characters, and objects that decontextualise the values I have been taught and re-contextualise them in performative and artificial settings. My interest lies in how geographical territory, tradition, visual culture, and language shape and are deeply embedded into gender identity and the formation of the self.
In the art of undoing, I leave you with bodies that see its transmission.
In the politics of silence, I leave room for you to create.
I leave you with its actions, show you its remanence, and leave room for symbols to fill the space.
With the need for rebuilding, I leave you with the theatre of doing.
I am your culture, and belonging is capital.
What brings us together on this day?
