Epangelia Ador
Artist Statement
This project is about visual language and how to communicate through visual representation. Inspired by the surrealist movement, the work is a stream of consciousness expressed through Onirism. The fantasy of the artwork explores and contrasts the deep fears, differences, identity and relationships of family and the emotions of being human. The childish appearance of the characters and the bright colours are a trap for the audience; they will be intrigued about the black bodies and the lack of faces.
If the scenes look like cut outs, it is because of the complexity of expressing pure feelings and portraying them visually on canvas: The resulting images work both on the painting surface as formal pattern and through blurred psychological processes hidden within the imagery.
The work has evolved in real time and within each of the different pieces of the project. Developing the visual language has been crucial for the artist, who has tried to find a way to combine words and imagery to produce a fluidity between them. The research process has been based on producing spontaneity in the audience’s feelings: artworks which can surprise and evoke memories, or hidden thoughts and which speak in a universal language.
