Artist Statement

I am an illustrator preoccupied with mark-making and texture. I use ink, watercolour and gouache to draw, paint and collage. A deep love for the natural world has a profound influence on my compositions. With my illustrations, I aim to provide a poetic or re-enchanted vision of everyday life.

Whilst my illustrations are rooted in keen observation and traditional drawing techniques, I seek not just to represent nature at a surface level, but to reveal something of its essence. My work is not entirely interested in the comprehension of the world, but rather its apprehension. Little wonder then, that my time at Bath Spa has culminated in a picture book exploring these themes.

The book unfolds across three interconnected parts. It opens with a man estranged from the world by the mechanisms of the digital age. Then, through a seemingly banal encounter with a blackbird, something akin to both joy and longing is felt. As his heart stirs for a common bird, the man leaves behind the linear infrastructure, noise and claustrophobia of the city and follows the bird into the great wood at the edge of things. At this threshold, he is between worlds: the old has passed, the new not yet arrived.

Through his physical engagement with the natural world, as opposed to an abstract contemplation of it, the man finds meaning. His vision, after each encounter, slowly becomes transfigured.
