Artist Statement

IT Chapter One is a horror film following the story of a group of kids in the small town of Derry, going on adventures to defeat the towns monster... Pennywise the clown...

My intention is to take inspiration from this infamous horror movie & converting it into a live play for theatre.

The concept of this play follows its title of ‘Beneath the Surface’ which alludes to the two layered design, the top being the movie scenes we are all so familiar with. In the darkness beneath we see my interpretations of what could be skulking in the sewers connecting Derry.

Taking inspiration from designers such as Chloe Lamford, I'm able to translate the visual metaphor of trapping the characters within the reoccurring nightmare by designing the set in an obstructive manner, using scaffolding and restrictive shapes.

Each scene is specifically designed to be confined within cubes, to amplify this metaphor & to create some uncomfortable distance between the characters and audience. However, more practically, to easily transport during transit when on tour and to seamlessly configure during scene changes.

Integrating my interior design background, the outcome consists of: a physical model, a book containing digital renders of 3D models alongside technical drawings, a mind map of visual imagery to support my findings and a walkthrough video of the 3D model. Accomplished with the help of workshops such as: Laser cutting, screen-print, sculpture, digital print & photography.
