Artist Statement

My ceramics practice explores the relationship with my faith and how I share that through art. I grew up surrounded by Catholic imagery, rituals, and objects. These experiences continue to impact the way I understand the world. My work exists within the space between belief and doubt, devotion and questioning, comfort and uncertainty, and pushing through that as I grow. I am interested in the space between rejecting faith and returning to it, and in the possibility that both can exist within the same space.I find myself connected to the vulnerability of clay as it can crack, collapse, break, along with not always being able to be in control of what happens next. These qualities become metaphors for my own experience of faith, particularly the struggle to hold onto belief while questioning what I have been taught. Catholic art and its history is an important influence on my practice. I am interested in devotional objects, saints, religious artifacts, altars, icons, and the symbolism found within Catholic churches. Rather than simply celebrating these images, I use them as a way to examine my own relationship with them. Familiar symbols can become fragmented, altered, or reimagined, reflecting the uncertainty I feel towards the faith they represent. In the end, my work is the means by which I express myself through storytelling and share those experiences with others.
