Artist Statement

My art practice is primarily rooted within illustration, utilising both digital and traditional mediums in my creative process. Whilst I often work digitally, my fondness for creating work through traditional means has developed an ever growing interest in exploring new mediums and techniques that can contribute to the development of my practice and benefit my overall knowledge and experience within the various fields of art and design that I occupy.

I have only recently started working within narratives in order to create short illustrative publications that vary in themes, genres, and formats. My current experience comes from the production of a series of zines based on personal expressionism, to comics with a focus on humour and character driven dialogue.

My current publication project ‘G(NYA)RU’ is my first attempt at creating a story that differs from my usual style of illustration, focusing on a more simplistic style that compliments the lighthearted themes and over the top antics present within the story.

The story explores the daily life of Japanese high school student Hana, alongside her cat father Tatsuo, and classmate Yukari. The short story explores a series of surreal situations that take place throughout what could be considered a mundane school week, and the bizarre characters at the centre of them.

G(NYA)RU uses the traditional manga format for its reading order with each page being read from right to left. Combining both lighthearted humour with absurd mundane situations G(NYA)RU is a short yet amusing story for teens and young adults.
