Artist Statement

Benito treats painting as a space where the things he adores have the possibility of cohabitation. He’s deliberately putting them on the canvas with hope, asking them to interact. Literary extracts, personal experiences and references to other artists’ work are painted along with each other. The need for it originates mostly from the narrative this accumulation of stimuli creates and also the possible dialogues between the different sources of referencing.

The images are various: Estranged houses, lost travelers, lovers, empty spaces and mirrors. Engaging themes of memory, translation, and language, Ekmekdjian builds emotionally charged images with formal complexity. While painting is his main medium, he has recently shown expansion to both installative work and screenprinting, Benito pushes these different languages within his body of work to be in dialogue, to coexist. He has exhibited on numerous occasions in Buenos Aires, both in group and individually, and currently resides in England, seeking professional development.
