Artist Statement

This final Masters’ project dives into a fantasy of colour, textures and objects by embracing the fusion of two different cultures coexisting in the same world: Mexico and Great Britain; both being western cultures yet, very different from each other. Isla de los Tesoros is the conclusion of a three-part journey in which the designer has embarked during his whole academic year, using his personal point of view and the continuous discovery of new things, while embracing his heritage through a fusion of two worlds that could easily clash, but somehow, they could also unify. This final collection resembles the fusion of the two by adding Mexican textures to iconic British objects in a respectful, yet quirky manner to show how cultural exchange is relevant to creative practices, particularly in the Textile Design field.

This set of final pieces was designed so that the audience can perceive the beauty within cultural exchange by identifying graphics that resemble items that are known and important to them, mixed with colourful prints that depict the core of a different society. All placed as a series of textiles which can turn a room into a warm and playful atmosphere using bold colours, different textile materials and the design of a homely space. This project aims to connect with the viewer and to prove that the blending of two different worlds can turn into something beautiful, functional and uplifting.
