Artist Statement
‘The Fire’ project started with: Parasocial relationships/ interactions and my curiosity towards understanding emotional investments and attachments between different personalities of viewers and fictional characters. Emotional experience and influence are what drives my creation. I strive to make something that relates to audiences in hope they feel less alone in their struggles, their joys and their successes, and so I do extensive research into my target audience and who is most likely to enjoy and connect to my work.
Through textured and colourful neo-noir styles, a dystopian anti-hero comic was born. Targeting my audience through shared pain and perceived failures, the hero embarks upon a journey to find a loved one, in a second edition this end with a mistake that isn’t seen to come. The first edition is made to make viewers want more, exhibiting a parasocial interaction and connection to the story/characters.
Through this I aim to create more of a dialogue around visual media and its impacts on mental health. Some experience an incredibly strong attraction to fictional characters. It can provide an escape for people; and can result in an attachment to false realities. I aimed to create something eye catching and beautiful, something to hold attention so the viewer may connect with the characters. It is a point of conversation for people who live these parasocial interactions (healthy and unhealthy) to share their experiences, and how this has helped them through hard times, or swallowed them whole in a false reality.
